The Essex County hazard mitigation plan records a river gauge on the Peckman River at Ozone Avenue in Verona with a minor flood stage of 3.5 feet, and documents that on August 22, 2021, ahead of Hurricane Henri, the Peckman rose above minor flood stage at 12:35 am, crested at 3.78 feet at 12:40 am and fell back below flood stage by 12:55 am.

In Verona the water in the basement may not be groundwater

A third of the housing predates 1940, mostly on the valley side, and the rest is mid century, so the age of your own house decides whether you are dealing with a shallow stone wall or a poured one with a cracked block or two.
