Where the ground rises on one side of a building, water moves sideways through shallow soil and reaches the foundation on that side, so the wall the damp shows on is often downstream of the wall it came through. Where the lot is level, the answer still helps, because then we are looking at the drains, the grade and the downspouts instead. Either answer is useful and not knowing is a normal answer.
